Workin' On It

Hello, all!

I am so sorry to not have my complete blog up and running for you to read. However, I am definately working on it! Shortly I hope to have some interesting things for you to read about and some projects for you to do that make great gifts or that you can keep for yourself!

Any of the projects that I post will be easy enough for just about anyone to do. Some people may need a bit of help (like kids..), but for the most part, they are friendly to those who really aren't busting out with talent in crafts arena. The best part? They come out looking great! These can be created using a template that you can customize yourself so you can give a special gift that people will love. Check back in a few days. I will be updating as I get new material together.

How to make this project...

Materials:

(2) 12" x 12" Template pages by Jill Means
(Order these ahead of time since they have to shipped to you after you complete them.)
(3) 3 1/2" wood blocks
(2) 5 1/2" wood blocks
Sand paper (optional)
Mod Podge (matte finish - find at any craft store)
Foam brush
Craft paint
Paper cutter / Scissors

Start by creating your own FREE publishing account on my website: http://www.storytellerslegacy.com/.

If you haven't used our Studio before, please contact me so I can get you started with it.

Now that you have done that, go into the "Templates Gallery" and find the template for a 12" x 12" scrapbook page entitled: "Heritage Blocks by Jill Means". You can use this template to customize with your own pictures and change the paper and artwork as you like. The template is already designed with the sizes that you will need for the blocks.

Cut your blocks from a wood 2" x 4" as follows (Of course, this part isn't for the kids to do!):

3 @ 3 1/2"

2 @ 5 1/2"

After the blocks are cut, sand the edges (optional) so that they are no longer sharp and to give them a softer look.

Paint the edges any coordinating color of craft paint that you wish. Just do the edges, because the paper from the template will cover the rest for you.

While you wait for the paint on your blocks to dry, cut out the different pieces on your 12" x 12" template pages. One page has the 5 1/2" pieces and the other has the 3 1/2" pieces. I suggest using a paper cutter so that you get a smoother line on the edge. However, if you have a steady hand, by all means use your favorite scissors!

When the blocks are dry and the pieces are cut out, get out your Mod Podge and foam brush. Paint a layer onto each block. You may want to pour some of the Mod Podge out on a paper or other disposable plate to make the application easier.

To also make things easier as you go, you may want to lay out a block and all the pieces that go with it at the same time.

After you paint the Mod Podge on the block, let it dry for just a minute so it gets a bit tacky and then press on a piece in the corresponding size of the side you are working on. Make sure that the top piece on the block is the last one to be done so they can sit upright to dry.

Turn the blocks over and repeat this process until all the pieces have been applied to the block including the sides.

Allow time for the blocks to dry and then apply a layer of Mod Podge on top of the blocks over the pieces. It will dry clear.

Paint the front, back and top of each block with Mod Podge. When that dries, paint the sides. When the sides dry...
YOU'RE DONE!!

This is a great activity for families and friends as well. Have fun!
